negative-thoughts-are-they-normal-or-harmful

Negative thoughts allow us to grow and improve as an individual. They allow us to solve problems, process our emotions, and learn from our experiences. They are part of human experiences. However, patterns of negative thoughts can be unhealthy and may require behavioral health services in District of Columbia.

There are different patterns of negative thoughts:

  • Constant self-criticism

Self-criticisms are sometimes beneficial for us to learn from our actions and their consequences. However, constant self-criticism can affect how we perceive things, which increases the risk of developing depression. If you have patterns of depressive thoughts or constant self-criticism, seek psychiatric services in Washington, District of Columbia.

  • Catastrophizing

Catastrophizing is a cognitive distortion where one thinks of the worst possible scenario without any evidence to prove the conclusion. This is an unhealthy thinking pattern. Individuals who use catastrophizing may magnify negative thoughts and think of the worst-case scenario. Thankfully, it can be managed with talk therapy

  • Intrusive thoughts

Intrusive thoughts can come suddenly. They are often negative and opposite to someone’s values. However, some individuals believe that their intrusive thoughts are true. It is often observed in people with OCD. They have intrusive thoughts and seek ways (compulsions) to relieve the anxiety caused by the thoughts. Intrusive thoughts can also be managed with cognitive behavioral therapy.
